I have observed fish eagles a great deal in Baja Sur, Mexico but I have never seen one swim. That's a first. I have seen them pick up some pretty impressive sized fish. I have seen them when there eye's were bigger that there ability to pull it off as well. More than once I have seen them pulled into the water by the fish before they could get loose and once completely submerged before getting loose. It was completely submerged without even the wing tips showing and I thought it was a goner. After a few seconds it broke the surface and in a mighty effort thrashed it's way back into the air. I think it gave up on lunch that day because it went to the top of a nearby cactus to rest.
